Note that varicella (VZV) IgG titers performed by commercial laboratories are not sensitive and may have a false negative rate of 15% or higher when compared to the gold standard FAMA (fluorescent antibody to membrane antigen). VZV IgM titers are also highly unreliable because of problems differentiating VZV IgG from VZV IgM under the assay conditions (e.g. an increase in VZV IgG could be mistakenly measured as VZV IgM)
